Duero

Rowing in Portugal: Hiking on the Douro – a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Rowing in Europe offers a hiking trip on the Douro. Rowing along the vineyards of
Portugal’s most eventful river.
The Douro, about 890 km long, rises in the Picos de Urbión in the northern Spanish province of Soria at an altitude of 2080 meters. It is 112 km long and forms the Spanish-Portuguese border, where the river landscape is situated on both sides in protected nature parks. From here it flows 213 km in Portugal, passing the Alto Douro wine region. The Douro flows into the Atlantic at Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia. Alto Douro became the world’s first protected wine region in 1756 and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001. Besides port, red wines are also important here: by the way: the GR 14 Senda del Duero international long-distance hiking trail also runs from the source to the mouth.
We start our trip with a transfer from Porto to Pinhao. We row
23-30 km daily and arrive in Porto after 4.5 rowing days and approx. 120 km. We pass parts of the Alto Douro and row through 3 locks. We are accompanied by a safety boat to row safely at all times. Porto can be reached by Easy Jet or Ryan Air from many airports in D – A- and Switzerland.
